Upcycled Shutter photo display and organizer

Today I’m sharing a cute (and inexpensive) way to organize your mail and/or display photos.  Awhile ago,I was on a bit of a mission trying to find shutters for our home. Between my mom, husband and I, we found plenty along the way at thrift stores and by simply telling people I was looking for them (I didn’t care that they were used, the plastic ones are super easy to just clean up and paint anyway). We were so successful that I actually had some leftover and I was determined to find a use for them.

While painting the shutters for my home, I realized that when hung it upside down, I could slide stuff into the slits (Mail, Cards etc) & it would stay put. Voila! A good use for those extra shutters; a cute way to keep my office organized. Once I “upcycled” the shutter by cleaning & painting it to match the room, I grabbed some clothespins I had on hand to display photos using the shutter as well because hello….I need more ways of displaying the gazillion photos I have. Here are the steps….which are ridiculously easy.

  • Clean & paint the shutter.
(You could use either wood or plastic shutters, the one I used for this DIY was an old wood one I found…for free :)
I just used spray paint & allowed plenty of time to dry between coats (2-3).
I used a neutral color for this one but I’m actually making another one that’s brightly colored next to add some pop on the wall.
  • When completely dry:
    lip upside down
-Turn it over & add a wall hanger.
  • Then just hang it up and put your mail in the slits. If using to display photos, just pickup some clothespins or clips.

Yep, it’s really that fast & easy!

This is so smart! I’ve seen this style done in department stores, but they are so expensive. It’s great to be able to make it yourself!

    xo Always, Abby
