Since Mother’s Day is right around the corner, I thought I’d attempt to make one of those cool, sharpie mugs. I think these are a great gift idea: they’re personalized, one of a kind & fun to make. After looking at several tutorials on how to make one, I noticed that many people were saying that the mugs weren’t dishwasher safe if you use a regular sharpie, that the ink washed off….BUMMER! So, I looked into alternative ways to make them more durable. I found some tutorials using special porcelain pens, but honestly, I didn’t want to spend the extra $$ on those….I was determined to make a regular Sharpie work! I modified the instructions to see if I could make one, using regular sharpies, that would survive the dishwasher…and my Momasaurus modification worked, HOORAY!
What you’ll need to make it:
Onto the directions…
- Wipe down mug really well with rubbing alcohol
- Create an awesome doodle; so fun!
- Let dry & let it sit out for about 2 hours
- Put in cold oven *don’t preheat
- Heat oven to 350 degrees
- Bake for 30 minutes
- Turn oven off but leave mug in there until oven cools (I actually did this in the evening and after turning the oven off, I just left the mug in there overnight)
- Admire how cool it is :)
In the morning, I put it in the dishwasher on a regular cycle to see if the design would fade or come off and I was pleased to see it survived! It looked the same as it did when I put it in there (the bottom picture on the collage above is the proof). I am NOT a fan of handwashing anything BUT I would still recommend handwashing your mug if it was made by a loved one, I wouldn’t want to risk fading by dishwashing it often. If you just make one for fun like I did, then try it out in the dishwasher you risk- taker you! ;)
